Dawn Of Demise: Hate takes its form

09/10/09  ||  Daemonomania

The Danes in Dawn of Demise listened to Suffocation. A lot. And they all agreed that they loved what they heard. So they set out to record their own albums of music to be heavily influenced by Long Island, NY’s most brutal residents. Early on, however, a problem presented itself. Those fast, intricate, flowing sections that Suffo creates effortlessly turned out to be pretty difficult to master. Someone in DOD (no, not the DOD that is bugging my phone) had the bright idea to simply edit those parts out and instead focus on the slooooowness. Ahhh, much easier. Instead of breaking down a crazy fast song, just focus on the breaking down!

As Confucius says, “it does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.” He was definitely talking about death metal.

Those who know me know that I like mid- to snail-paced DM. So this approach doesn’t bother me in the least. But your ability to tolerate “Hate fills out its W-4 form” relies strictly upon your appreciation or disgust regarding chunky, pummeling, and repetitive song structures. Is “Back to the grave” a great album? How about “Gateways of annihilation”? If you answered yes to either of these two, not only do you win a free autographed photo of Daemo’s throbbing penis but also a strong recommendation to check this shit out. And no faking that you enjoy either of the above-mentioned discs just to get the penis pic! I’m on to you – you lying horny bastard.

The production is incredibly crisp, allowing you to hear the band max and relax as they lay into some comfy grooves interspersed with slightly faster bits. The singer’s low growl compliments the proceedings nicely, the drums are nothing special despite the fact that this pace has allowed drummers to shine (Jensa, or Sandoval, or your stupid drunk mom), and the guitars sound like a barrel of bricks. Toss a couple cool samples into the mix, stretch it out over ten songs, stick a pitchfork in it.

What else to say? Good but not great. Worthy of the occasional listen. Stupid band name. Dawn of what demise? Dawn of Your Demise sounds a bit emo, Dawn Demise sounds like someone who hates mornings, maybe Dawn of the World’s Demise? Nah, that sounds post-metal. Shoulda just scrapped the name idea and started over. Last but not least, some irritating fucker who is in a few Danish bands sings on here. I recognize his voice right away. Maybe the vocalist of Hatesphere? Anyway, he sounds core to the core and ruins the track he appears on. His absence, plus a great “There Will Be Blood” quote and better songwriting makes “…And blood will flow” a standout tune.

In the Great Metalwall of China, this is but a single metalstone. But without individual stones, there would be no wall. Did that sound Confucian? I’ll quote the big man one more time to relate Suffocation and their many followers: “what the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others”.
